This Saturday marks the annual National Cherish an Antique Day, which is a perfect opportunity to celebrate everything old in your life! Whether it’s your car, your collection of cast iron skillets, or even your musty uncle who gets a kick out of your pretending to find out his value (and being shocked about it), show off your antique stuff this weekend in honor of the day.
- Visit an antique store (or, as we used to call them when I was a kid, “Auntie Q” stores) and see what kinds of treasures you might find. Take a child with you and let him or her spend $5 on some old toys. We find our best Strawberry Shortcake stuff this way.
- Take your kids to see an antique car show. See if they can guess how much the cars are worth, or if they’re younger, just see if they can tell you how the cars differ from today’s modern models.
- Get a model of an antique car or train to put together as a family.
- Cook with antique equipment, if you have it and you can, or light a fire in an old stove. My dad keeps one of these in his garage to light on cold nights and special occasions. Sit around the fire and discuss what it might have been like to have this as your only source of heat. Use oil lamps or candles and no other sources of electricity to complete the effect.
