transmission - '97 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I have a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo (V8) with about 75,000 miles on it. Lately, I've noticed
a hesitation in the shift sequence of the automatic transmission when I get to 40-45 mph.
In addition, when I take my foot off the gas at about 50-55 mph, the vehicle seems to decelerate
too quickly -- almost as if it were towing something. As it decelerates, I've noticed that the rpms
decrease, then spike momentarily. It is almost as if I'm downshifting in a manual transmission.
Any advice?

what gear are you in at 50-55

what gear are you in at 50-55 when you start slowing down. If you are right at a shift point, and you let off the gas before it shifts to the higher gear, it will slow faster. As far as the spike goes, it may be getting hung up at the next point. Is your fluid at the proper level?

It's after the shift point,

It's after the shift point, not before... Fluid was first thing I checked.

Try a trans flush if you

Try a trans flush if you haven't had one in the last year and a half or so. You put a lot of miles on it. If the flush doesn't correct the problem, you may need service on the trans. I think the car is still worth money -if you've kept it in good shape.
