  • A Self Healing Car?

    Add Comment

Minor scratches and surface damage are part of normal wear and tear on a vehicle,  and can be caused by anything from branches to car washes to carelessness.  While most of these abrasions are barely noticable, over time they add to the overall aging of a car, causing the finish to look dull and tired.  Ironically, the standard approach to keeping your car's finish looking in top condition is a good wash, polish and buff but it is just this kind of activity that can cause fine, hair line scratches in the surface.

Now, thanks to some clever scientists over at Inifiti there is now a way to repair these without even lifting a finger.  In fact, the car will actually heal it's own abrasions.   A clear resin coating applied to the surface softens in daylight to fill small scrapes and scratches.  This invention will be a boon to anyone living in a coastal or desert area where their car is constantly being bombarded by sand.  The protective nature of this chemical coating also keeps that new-car finish bright,  and almost eliminates the fine webs of scratches caused by washing.  The company claims that their SUV

Gina BMW Fabric Car2008 saw the automotive world getting caught up in eco-geek trends, pioneering hybrid designs, electric cars and alternative fuels.  Sexy, over-indulgent, supercars were castrated by electric engines; roaring and irreverent sports car engines were tamed with the introduction of bio-fuels and cars in general seemed to hang their heads in shame in a world that is becoming increasingly aware of energy efficiency, emissions and the growing fuel crisis.  While the motivation behind these themes signifies a positive change in our attitudes to our environment, and is obviously a move in the right direction,  it has meant that some of the spark seems to have been sucked out of the passion behind motoring.

  • 1992 plymouth voyager - rough idles some times shows no codes  and no heat from heater at idles

Rough idle sometimes occurs at start up. In the summer the ac will not work until the car is pulled off the road, motor killed and engine restarted. I have replaced all sensors on motor, oxygen, throttle position, etc.
Throttle body has been removed and cleaned and new gaskets installed. No Help!
    No computer codes.
The second problem is the heater--does not work at idle. Only works when rpms are at 2000 or better. I have checked the heater core and flushed it and the heater control valve-found no problem. This is a 3.0 V-6 1992 Phymouth Voyager. I have owned it for only 1 year. I'm down to replacing the computer on the idling problem. When the computer detects rought idle or wide open throttle, it shuts the ac down. Would like some help. Thanks, Tracy. (Slickguy is my son.)

  • engine surging & car bucking

In Feb. of this year 2001 my transmission gave out on my 1994 Ford Tarus GL. A rebuild was put in by a reputable auto service. Since then, after we got it back, when we start the car and put into drive, still holding my foot on the brake, as I let go the lunges foward like a bull. Sometimes this happens, sometimes it doesn't. On top of that after it's been running a while, when I come to a stop sign, especially a red light or I'm just idling waiting for my wife in the store, the engine hummm's at a normal idle, then goes way down like it's going to stall completely out, then back up again to a normal idle, then down again, then up again. It's embarassing because people look at me sitting there with the engine going up and down, like "Hey stupid, that sounds ridiculous, get it fixed". We brought it back to the service guy several times but it never gets fixed, plus he said "all I did was replace your transmission, that has nothing to do with whats going on now". When we come out of the store, turn on the key and put it in reverse, it stalls out. We have to reve it up a little while putting it in reverse, (which can be very dangerous)just to get it not to stall.

    1.6L Won't start.
    Plugs replaced.

    3 time in 36 months.
Always cold at time of failure.
    Jan 2000 Dec 2000 Jan 2001

    Things eliminated.
Gas put in nearly empty tank.
Plugs (already but yes again replaced later after oil dropped into cylinders for compression check)

Fuel pump is within spec and fuel comes out of the OUT side of the under hood filter.

Plugs have aroma of gas and cab/choke type spray
    Airfilter is clean (relatively new)

Symtom began after turning car off(RUNNING FINE) Thursday night. Friday morning after 15degrees temperature outside would not hit a lick when ignition turns engine over.

    Mileage is 80K
ECU is apparently functional since plugs fire when dangled onto engine.

Motor turns at NORMAL speed when cranking.
    Starter sounds normal.

Car was one quart low on oil but that has been replaced.

Any ideas on a new path of elimination?

  • Auto Makers Get the Bailout – But Under What Conditions?

    Add Comment

So all of this talk about the big three automakers and whether or not they would get a slice of the auto bailout is finally concluded. The results are in from the final weeks of our lame duck president’s tenure: we will give them nearly $17 billion to stay afloat and fend off Chapter 11. However, they must meet some really simple conditions to do so. Does this bother anybody that they were only asking for less than half that amount at first, now two of the big three want double the original amount?

    The Conditions are Rather Simple
The conditions for the bailout, actually loan from the feds, are rather simple. The car companies get nearly seventeen billion dollars in loans so that they can stay afloat until middle of the March, in 2009, when they must demonstrate clearly that they can become viable and profitable once again. If they do not, the feds will step in and force Chapter 11 and restructure the companies anyway.

  • 1997 Ford F150 with Engine? Transmission? Knock

    PROBLEM DESCRIPTION

There is a metallic tapping sound coming from the engine/transmission when under load. Sounds something like valve/lifter clatter – but deeper, more solid sounding.

The sound is MUCH louder when the engine is cold and just above cruise RPM. (Estimate >2500 RPM – no tack). Sound diminishes as the engine reaches operating temperature. The sound sometimes stops when torque converter locks up, especially when engine is coming up to operating temperature, but will return as soon as converter unlocks.
NOTE: Torque converter rebuilt 11/8/01 – no change to problem.

    PROBLEM DEMONSTRATION

When engine is cold; Start engine and pull out onto a roadway (preferably up hill) and accelerate to traffic speed – problem will be apparent. The noise will be very audible for about 10 miles, (or 15 minutes) then will diminish, but will not totally go away.

Also can be demonstrated when setting still: When engine is cold, start engine, hold brake and put in drive. While holding brake, press down lightly on accelerator (to load engine). Noise will again be apparent.

    HISTORY

The engine was replaced at 65,000 miles.

  • Even Foreign Car Makers Feeling the Pinch: Toyota Losing Money For First Time Since 1941

    Add Comment

One of the largest auto makers in the world, Toyota, has posted their fist losses in seventy years, since the middle of World War Two, in late 1941. Spurred mostly by the global recession that has nearly bankrupted the big three auto makers in the United States, Toyota is acting quickly to assure that they do not meet the same certain fate that the American big three auto makers have succumbed to. And while Toyota operates in union-free plants in the US, with far lower operating costs than other rival auto makers, they have already lost a few billion dollars this year alone, and expect the trend to continue well into 2009.

    The Economic Crisis Affects Everybody
The big three auto makers are not the only auto makers that are feeling their belts tighten.

I own a 95 VW Golf. Today in high traffic where we moved a car length every 10 minutes my car ran into an issue. After about an hour of this I noticed that my car was not moving as much as it should for the gas I was giving it. It continued when traffic started to flow. My speedometer would stick at 30 in 3rd gear, but I was giving it gas enough to put me at 40. Once I had stopped and driven a bit more into a parking lot, I dropped it into 1st gear and the problem was not there.

I did smell something burning like after you use your breaks heavily for hours. That is all I noticed.

    Thank you in advance,

  • Best Time to Buy a New Car in Twenty Five Years Coming Soon!

    Add Comment

The auto bailout is on the minds of many during our troubled economic times. However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and a brighter future is not that far off in the distance. While car buying is at an all time low—the major auto makers aim to sift that presiding notion by restructuring everything they know to make it all work again. And what this ultimately translates into, is that very soon, in the not so distant future of the next coming year, will be the best time to buy a car since the 1980s.

What the Auto Bailout Means for You
The auto bailout means several things for you and me; the consumer. The cars that we bought from the big three auto makers will retain their values and their warranties. It means that we will see a reduction in price of future cars that are made domestically. And it means that millions of people will not lose their jobs, which would create most certain economic calamity to add to the already growing financial woes in our country.

  • The Pros and Cons to the Auto Bailout

    Add Comment

If you are wondering yourself what many other Americans are wondering, as it relates the big three auto maker and whether or not any of them will be in business come this time next year, there are some pros and some cons to ponder. Firstly, what happens if the bailout is successful, and what does that mean for you and me? Secondly, what if the bailout fails, who foots the billions of dollars in loans? And finally, is this bailout worthwhile, or should the auto makers be forced into bankruptcy? And one more thing to consider here: what effect has the auto maker unions had on the failure of the big three auto makers?

    The Pros
The auto makers get a second chance. The auto maker unions get a taste of their own medicine and realize that they can no longer hold the industry hostage to their greedy and ridiculously pricey demands. The industry will undergo much needed reform. The ending results will be higher quality cars that cost far less and are much more reliable.

  • $17.4 Billion Auto Bailout Approved by Bush

    Add Comment

If you have not seen it all over the news today, President Bush, in an effort to preserve some sort of a legacy, approved a $17.4 billion auto bailout for GM and Chrysler, whose executives during congressional hearings over the past few months have voiced that their companies did not have enough cash to sustain operations into the new year. But the bailout is just a temporary fix to a big time problem, one that staves off an orderly bankruptcy, according to Bush, and allows the major auto makers to regroup and restructure into viable and profitable entities by an end of March deadline in 2009.

  • Hooray for Cheap Gas!

All I can do when I arrive at the gas pump is smile and look fondly at how low the prices are now for a gallon of gas. A nostalgic, Clinton-era tear whets the corner of my eye, provoked by fond memories of gas that was just about a buck a gallon during the earlier part of this decade. And on the other side of my face streams another tear, rejoicing that my monthly gas bill has effectively dropped from $180+ per month, to well under eighty bucks; more nachos and movies for me this December!

And I think that everybody is with me when I exclaim: thank goodness the gas prices have dropped and there is cheap fuel to be had, because I don’t know how much longer I could afford to pay four bucks or more per gallon at the pump. It felt like highway robbery and indeed it was. Oil production had not slowed. Wells were not going dry at a freakish rate.

  • Is it Safe to buy a ‘Big Three’ Car Right Now?

    Add Comment

For those of you who find yourselves in the position to purchase a new automobile, you may want to look to another company than an American automaker right now until further headway and progress is made with the fall of the ‘Big Three’ automakers in the United States. Now there are some who would say this is preemptive, and that more Americans need to buy more American made cars and trucks. But from a personal perspective, there is much to consider before you make your decision on whether or not you should hold off on buying that new GM, Ford or Chrysler car.

As of right now, senate has repeatedly shot down any bailout funds for the ‘Big Three,’ making their financial indisposition even more despairing.

  • Top Four Reasons Not to Buy a New Car Right Now!

    Add Comment

As if you did not need the top four reasons as to why you should be wiser and hold off on that new car purchase, I aim to demonstrate exactly why! The economy is daft, at the present. Many people are losing their jobs every day. In fact, November of 2008 posted the most job losses in nearly thirty years, a nice round figure of over half a million of those who were gainfully employed, but opened their locker, or arrived at their cubicle to find a pink slip next to their holiday greeting card. And for those who thought that their holiday bonus may tide them through the yuletide, many are finding that the businesses and companies that they used to be employed with are so strapped that they are not even issuing bonuses in many cases. So yes, indeed, making a whopping commitment to purchase a new car is not the most educated decision that one could make right now, all things considered.

  • Does Anybody Ever Get Approved for Zero Interest Car Loan?

I am sure that you have seen them frequently on the television set, especially late at night, when the TV channels seem adorned with advertisements and infomercials galore—you know those zero money down car commercials brought to you by your local dealership, touting a zero interest loan for everybody. Here is a good rule of thumb when it comes to car dealership advertisements on the television: the big print gives and fine print takes away. What I find dreary and downright manipulative about these array of misleading ads, is that they are indeed misleading! Who do you know in your lifetime that has ever gotten approved for a zero interest auto loan? And, even if you happen to know one person, then what about the other hundred that didn’t get approved?

Is this a Form of False Advertising?
I believe that this is a form of false advertising, although I am certain the media agencies will wholeheartedly disagree with me.

  • Are Car Building Unions The Death of the Big Three Auto Makers?

    Add Comment

You can’t miss a thing about the current dilemma that is facing the big three auto makers in the United States – they are on the verge of going broke, and without some serious assistance from the taxpayers in this country, to the tune of billions of dollars apiece, they will most certainly cease to exist. This would cause a trickle down effect on the entire dwindling economy of our great nation. Hundreds of thousands of jobs would be lost, dealerships would close, gas stations would suffer, and many cars would become worthless and so on.

    The Main Culprit
The main problem that is under riding the failure of the big three automakers are the ridiculous amounts of control that the unions hold over them. The unions demand healthcare for life for all employers, current or retired, or terminated. This costs the car makers billions each year. They unions demand a set hourly rate, whether or not cars are being made – this causes the overproduction of cars, thousands monthly. The unions even have job banks, where laid off employers get paid about ninety percent of their salaries for doing nothing but waiting.

  • The Smart Car Dilemma

    Add Comment

Have you heard about or seen these new so-called ‘Smart Cars?’ They are these teeny little things that barely have four wheels and can be quite often seen driving around the cities in our great nation. They are really small, and seat two people at maximum, and hail a small two cylinder engine which boasts a fabulous mile per gallon ratio, and they tend to be far less costly than most other vehicles. So that is the good part about the Smart Car. But are people overlooking something that is very important when it comes to automobiles – their safety if they become involved in a car accident?

The Smart Car is so tiny, that even a small, five mile per hour collision could easily collapse the entire frame. Sure, steel bars inside will help, but not if a sport utility vehicle comes careening at you at thirty miles per hour and shatters your tiny little Smart Car to pieces. So while the idea of a Smart Car is smart, it really is not all that smart at all.

I own a 1999 Ford Contour. Six month after purchasing the car new I began having air conditioning problems. The refrigerant was replaced forst, then the evaporator then the dealer gave up. The problem that exists now is the dash vents (ac system) produce air which has a 20 degree temperature variation acrodd the dash vents. With an outside temp of 83 degrees the right side vent might deliver 53 degree cooled air while the left side vent delivers 73 degree air. The result is a cabin temperature of 88 degrees. The dealer noted on the last work order that there was a design defect. I don't believe that. The car is still under warranty.

  • What Does it Mean for GM Owners if they go Belly-Up?

    Add Comment

As the senate is currently busy debating whether or not they should offer up a sizable portion of billions of dollars in taxpayer money to bailout the auto industry, some of the largest US automakers are on the verge of ceasing to exist. GM posted its largest losses in the history of the company this year, and without a few billions dollars in accessible cash; they predict that they will be out of business in early 2009. So what does this tragedy mean for those who already own or just purchased a brand new GM vehicle?

Your Car Warranty Could be Voided
With GM out of business for good, you would no longer have a warranty on your car. This would mean that you pay for any and all repairs out-of-pocket, and that the value of your GM vehicle would be affected because the warranty is voided.

Repair Parts Could Triple in Cost and Accessibility
With the makers of GM belly up, the accessibility and the cost of repair parts would skyrocket as more consumers demand them and supplies dwindle.

    Add Comment

Looking at the signs of gas stations across America today, it's surreal to see prices lower than they were five years ago, especially considering how we were experiencing record high prices on a near-daily basis over the summer. During the steady incline in oil prices over the past five years, interest in alternative fuels also climbed. The most prominent change that interest contributed to our roadways is the presence of hybrid cars, but combination gas/electric engines are far from the only innovations of the era.

The Flintstones were on the right track, but they got one detail wrong- It's not about the legs, it's in the arms. One of the most interesting concept vehicles to come out of our country's recent courtship with economic and environmental concern is GC Greenwood's HumanCar. While its practicability is questionable, you can't argue with the results. The HumanCar is essentially the principle of Low Mass Engineering brought to its logical conclusion. At a svelt 500 pounds, the Imagine_PS model is light enough to be propelled at a rate of 60 MPH by nothing other than the back-and-forth manual input of the hand-cranks. The best part?
