how to disable cruise control on "84 Chev S-10

My chevy was accelerating by itself--I wasn't touching the gas pedal--so I pressed the brakes and luckily rolled into a rest area off of the interstate, threw it into park and pulled the keys out. The brakes were glowing and there was smoke all over. A mechanic told me over the phone to disable the cruise control on the side of the transmission with a pair of pliars, but I don't know what to look for. He says he doubts I did much damage to the brakes. Anyone have advice?

Sounds like he is having you

Sounds like he is having you to disconnect the speedometer cable at the side of the transmission. This would disable the cruise, but also the speedometer won't work. An alternate way would be to look at the side of the carburetor, under the air cleaner. There should be 2 cables attached to the throttle bellcrank, one that goes to your accelerator pedal, and one that goes to the cruise control servo. (Maybe a third one that goes back to the transmission if it is an automatic.) You can disconnect the servo cable at the carburetor, but would be a good idea to remove it from the area of the carburetor, so it won't get fouled in the carb linkage. Note that your cruise control may or MAY NOT have been the problem, though, so it should be checked out as soon as possible. As far as the brakes are concerned, while they are designed to deal with heat, red-hot is a little excessive. It would certainly be a good idea to inspect the friction surface area of the pads and rotors for cracking or excess wear. Also the wheel bearing grease may have overheated and caked, so it would be advisable to check that too.
